Exam at a glance
- Computerized adaptive test (CAT) with case-study items scored under the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model — recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action, evaluate outcomes.
- Effective April 1, 2026: the current 2026 NCLEX-PN Test Plan.
- Select-All-That-Apply items are scored with partial credit on the real exam, not all-or-nothing.
Who this is for
Practical/Vocational Nursing (PN/VN) program graduates preparing to sit the NCLEX-PN licensure examination.
What is tested — the official NCSBN blueprint
The NCLEX-PN is organised into four Client Needs categories, two of which are divided into subcategories — six subcategories in total. The category names and percentages below are the PN plan’s own and differ from the NCLEX-RN’s. NCSBN also notes that an individual exam’s distribution may vary by up to ±3% in each category.
| Client Needs category and subcategory | % of exam |
|---|---|
| Safe and Effective Care Environment | |
| Coordinated Care | 18–24% |
| Safety and Infection Prevention and Control | 10–16% |
| Health Promotion and Maintenance | 6–12% |
| Psychosocial Integrity | 9–15% |
| Physiological Integrity | |
| Basic Care and Comfort | 7–13% |
| Pharmacological Therapies | 10–16% |
| Reduction of Risk Potential | 9–15% |
| Physiological Adaptation | 7–13% |

Frequently asked questions
Is NCLEX-PN scored all-or-nothing on Select All That Apply (SATA) items?
No. The 2026 NCLEX-PN Test Plan states, in its own words, that "there is partial credit scoring for items for which more than one key exists", and names three methods: plus/minus, zero/one and rationale scoring. NCSBN's help centre confirms Select All That Apply items specifically use the plus/minus method. NCSBN has not published the exact formula, so CARE Nursing's practice-mode grading is an honest exact-match simplification rather than a claimed replication of it.
Does NCLEX-PN include Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) case studies?
Yes. The 2026 NCLEX-PN Test Plan describes the same NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model case-study architecture as NCLEX-RN — a minimum-length PN exam includes 18 scored case-study items (three six-item sets) plus roughly 10% additional stand-alone clinical-judgment items. NCSBN's own sample exam preview pack explicitly includes PN case studies alongside RN case studies.
How is NCLEX-PN's blueprint different from NCLEX-RN's?
They are not the same structure. PN's first category is named "Coordinated Care" (not RN's "Management of Care") and is weighted higher (18–24% vs. 15–21%). Psychosocial Integrity is weighted higher on PN (9–15%) than RN (6–12%). PN's pharmacology subcategory is named "Pharmacological Therapies," without RN's "...and Parenteral Therapies" suffix, and several category weightings differ numerically even where names match.
